Alexander Clarke Pays Tribute to Fallen Vieux Fort Hero

As I reflect on my childhood in Vieux Fort, one name stands out, a name synonymous with sportsmanship, community service, and an infectious charisma. Mr. Lubin, affectionately known to many as Dicky. Growing up, I admired him not just as a brilliant cricketer but as a pillar of our community.

I vividly recall our first encounter. It was a Saturday afternoon, the air filled with anticipation as the West Indies faced off against England in Barbados. Under the sprawling almond tree near Sapphire Restaurant, in Vieux-Fort, the scene was electric. Everyone seemed to congregate there, radios in hand, capturing the excitement of the game. It was a quintessential Vieux Fort moment, and at the center of it all was Mr. Lubin, engaging and animated.

As I listened to him speak, I was captivated. His vocabulary was nothing short of impressive; the words he used felt almost out of this world to me. It wasn’t just his command of language that struck me, but the passion behind it. He could paint vivid pictures with his words, just as he painted the cricket field with his remarkable fast bowling.

Indeed, Mr. Lubin was one of Vieux Fort’s best cricketers—a reputation well-deserved. His prowess on the cricket field was legendary, as he bowled with a speed and precision that left spectators in awe. Much like his bowling, his quick wit and sharp observations made him a beloved figure. He was fast both on the field and off, always sparking lively exchanges among friends and fans.

Beyond his sportsmanship, Mr. Lubin served our community as a Justice of the Peace. I remember the times I sought his assistance to sign documents; he would always smile and remind me that his services were free, though he would graciously accept whatever I chose to offer. This humility, paired with his unwavering commitment to helping others, exemplified the type of person he was.

Charismatic and no-nonsense, Mr. Lubin enjoyed life to its fullest, often found sharing a laugh over a drink of rum. His spirit resonated with authenticity. He was a man who valued integrity and community.

He was an unwavering pillar of support for the St. Lucia Labour Party (SLP). His dedication and loyalty to the party made him a formidable presence, earning him the admiration of many in the community. He was not just a supporter; he was a stalwart, embodying the passion and fearless spirit that defined the SLP.

Mr. Lubin’s commitment to the St. Lucia Labour Party was evident in every rally, conference, and political campaign he attended. He was a familiar face, always ready to lend his voice and energy to the cause. From candidates like Bruce Williams to Peter Josie and Dr. Kenny Anthony, he passionately championed the ideals and vision of the party, rallying his neighbors and fellow citizens to engage in the democratic process.

Fearless in expressing his political beliefs, Mr. Lubin was known for taking a stand, even against the powerful opposition of the United Workers Party. His unwavering faith in the SLP’s mission resonated deeply within the community, inspiring others to join in the political dialogue. He was often dubbed by me as “the Lone Ranger,” a testament to his relentless spirit and unwavering commitment to advocating for his beliefs, no matter the challenge.

Mr. Lubin never ceased campaigning, seizing any opportunity to promote the St. Lucia Labour Party’s agenda. His enthusiasm was contagious, and he had an exceptional talent for mobilizing support. He understood the importance of grassroots engagement, striving to make a difference in his community, one conversation at a time.
