SAT Publishes “Blood, Tears, and Politics”

Soufrière Action Theatre Publishes Debut Poetry Collection and Announces National Book Tour
The Soufrière Action Theatre (SAT) is pleased to announce the publication of its debut poetry collection, Blood, Tears, and Politics: Poetry of Roots and Resistance.

The collection brings together poems SAT members created and performed over many years. Rooted in the history, culture, and landscape of Soufrière, the poems explore African ancestry, identity, social justice, resistance, community life, and the continuing struggle for human dignity. Several were originally developed as “Drum-Talk,” SAT’s distinctive form of performance poetry combining spoken word, drumming, movement, call-and-response, and audience participation.

To mark the occasion, SAT will undertake a national book tour with events in Soufrière, Castries, and Vieux Fort. The Soufrière launch will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, 8 October 2026, at the Soufrière Primary School Auditorium. Details of the Castries and Vieux Fort (likely occuring Saturday 17 October) events will be announced shortly.

Two distinguished Saint Lucian authors, Modeste Downes and Dr. Anderson Reynolds, have praised the collection. Downes described it as “imbued with the authors’ impassioned sense of history, these poems are true gems.” Reynolds called it “a wonderful collection of poetry that brims with meaning and authenticity, honoring Saint Lucia’s African ancestry and vibrant folk culture.”

Established in 1980, the Soufrière Action Theatre is a community-based cultural organization dedicated to using the performing arts to promote cultural awareness, social development, and community participation. For more than four decades, SAT has helped preserve and celebrate Saint Lucia’s African heritage and folk culture through theatre, drumming, poetry, storytelling, masquerade traditions, and community education.

With the publication of Blood, Tears, and Politics, SAT is preserving a body of Saint Lucian creative expression that has existed largely within the country’s oral and performance traditions. The book will make this work more accessible to students, educators, researchers, cultural practitioners, and readers in Saint Lucia and abroad.

Blood, Tears, and Politics is especially meaningful because it coincides with SAT’s forty-sixth anniversary. Founded in 1980, SAT has been part of Saint Lucia’s cultural life since the early years after independence. The collection therefore serves as both a literary achievement and a way to preserve an important part of SAT’s contribution for future generations.

The publication of Blood, Tears, and Politics and its Soufrière launch were made possible through the generous support of Creative Industries, Ministry of Tourism; the Soufrière Foundation; and Jako Productions.

The book launch events are free and open to the public. More than conventional readings and book signings, they will be dynamic celebrations of Saint Lucian culture, blending spoken word, drumming, movement, call-and-response, and audience participation. This way, audiences will experience the poems in the performance tradition from which many of them emerged.

As Saint Lucia celebrates its Creole heritage this October, SAT invites the public to join these celebrations of poetry, performance, history, and culture.
